Troubleshooting Printer Problems Troubleshooting printers can be a pain. The usual reason a printer problem occurs is because the printer wasn't on when the computer booted up. If that's the case, always recheck the connections, make sure the printer is on and then reboot the computer. This will usually fix the problem as long as the printer's on before the computer restarts. The next most common reason for a printer to not print is that it's low on ink or the ink that was put in it was substandard, old or imitation. Never use cut-rate or non-name-brand ink cartridges. Even store brands may not work properly. Always use the manufacturer's branded ink. If the ink has always been the manufacturer's name brand, replacing the cartridges should fix the problem. If the problem persists, it's necessary to look at what's happening with the printer from the computer's point of view. To check: 1. Click start 2. Click settings (or Control Panel) 3. Click Printers and Faxes. 4. Click on the one printer you have. It should be named the same as the one connected to your computer. If you have more than one, make sure the one with the check mark is the one you actually have connected to the computer. If the printer with the check mark isn't the right one, click on the correct one and click File then click set as default. That should fix your problem. Try printing again. On the other hand, if there is a number other than 0 next to the printer (click View, Click Details and see if there is a job waiting - any number other than 0) it means a job is waiting and you need to clear the printer queue in order to get any new jobs to print. To empty the printer queue, click on the correct printer, click File then click Cancel All Documents. Wait for the number to change to 0. If it doesn't, restart the computer. If it does, you should be able to print properly. As long as the number is 0, click File, click Properties, click Print Test Page. If it's working, the printer should print a test page and will then print properly. If you still have problems, it may need to have the printer drivers reinstalled. Be sure you have the original installation CD for the printer (or have downloaded the printer drivers from the computer manufacturer's website) before proceeding. Turn off the printer. Make sure the printer queue is cleared (See above). Try deleting the printer by clicking on it and press the Delete key. Say Yes to the dialog to delete the printer. Then go to the Control Panel (Click Start, Click Settings or Control Panel) and double-click on Add/Remove Programs. Find any programs with the manufacturer of your printer (Brother, Epson, HP, etc.), click on it and click the Remove button and follow the prompts. Restart the computer. Put the CD in and follow the prompts. Usually the drivers are installed before the printer is turned on. Turn on the printer (and leave it on from then on) when prompted and finish installing the printer. If that doesn't work, your printer or computer may have more serious issues and should be checked by a qualified service center.
